Leroy Hood, Ph.d., M.D.
Pioneer in molecular immunology, biotechnology, and genomics
Co-founder and President, Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birthday, Darwin Day Celebrations were held all over the world in recognition of Darwin’s contribution in scientifically describing biological evolution via natural selection, and of the benefits of scientific knowledge generally in the advancement of humanity.

Dr. Leroy Hood spoke at Pacific Science Center on Darwin’s role and modern-day expansions and ramifications of scientific thought. Dr. Hood has played a crucial role in the technological foundation for contemporary molecular biology. He is currently involved in pioneering systems medicine and the systems approach to disease.

British scientist Charles Darwin (1809–1882) laid the foundation of modern evolutionary theory with the publication in 1859 of his book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

“… can we doubt (remembering that many more individuals are born than can possibly survive) that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and of procreating their kind? On the other hand, we may feel sure that any variation in the least degree injurious would be rigidly destroyed. This preservation of favourable variations and the rejection of injurious variations, I call Natural Selection.”

—Charles Darwin, Origin of Species
