“Future of Humanity: Symposium 1”
Convened August 12–16, 2000 | Bell Harbor Conference Center, Seattle, Washington
Summary
Nearly 70 scholars from some 40 intellectual and professional disciplines and 20 countries gathered in Seattle August 12–16, 2000, as guests of the Foundation For the Future and participants in the Foundation's first Humanity 3000 bi-decade symposium. The purpose of the symposium was to discuss the survivability of humanity over the next thousand years. Virtually all physical, biological, and social sciences were represented in the dialogues.
The multidisciplinary discussions focused on numerous factors likely to have a significant impact on the future of humanity. Participants assessed the past and future trajectories of such topics as scientific and technological developments, humanity’s place in the universe, evolution, governance, and human genetics. Three issues judged to be of critical importance were the sustainability of the planet, science and technology (including genetic engineering and artificial intelligence), and global ethics. A formal debate on the resolution “Humanity will be able to successfully manage the critical factors necessary for survival” was won by the proponent position by only a slim margin.
A highlight of the symposium was the awarding of the first Kistler Prize to Harvard University’s Dr. Edward O. Wilson, Pellegrino University Research Professor and eminent biological theorist.
Proceedings of this symposium, including transcripts of all dialogic sessions, available for download. Featured are two interviews – one with Michio Kaku and Ervin Laszlo and the other with E.O. Wilson – conducted by Sesh Velamoor, Deputy Director, Programs, Foundation For the Future.
