“Future of Planet Earth” Participant Biography

Molly K. Macauley
Dr. Molly K. Macauley is a Senior Fellow with Resources for the Future (RFF), Washington, DC. RFF was established at the request of President Truman, acting upon a recommendation of the William Paley Commission, as a “think tank” focusing on the economics of natural resources. At RFF, Dr. Macauley’s research is at the intersection of science and technology policy. Her specialty in space research includes economic and policy analysis of space transportation, space-related risk, space debris, and other issues. She also focuses on the value of Earth science information and the application of Earth science to climate-related public policy. Additional research expertise includes public finance, technological innovation and natural resources, and energy and waste management.
Dr. Macauley has testified before the US Congress on numerous occasions concerning her research and policy analysis. She also serves on many national-level committees and panels including the National Research Council’s (NRC) Space Studies Board; in addition, she served on the NRC Space Studies Board Workshop Study on Earth Observations and Applications from Space: A Community Assessment and Strategy for the Future. Dr. Macauley has also contributed to several studies by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on space and technology.
In 1994, she was selected as one of the National Space Society’s “Rising Stars,” and in 2001 she was voted into the International Academy of Astronautics. She has also received awards from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for her work on US Earth observations and the Federal Aviation Administration for outstanding support of rulemaking for the commercial space launch industry. Dr. Macauley has published extensively with more than 70 journal articles, books, and chapters of books. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Women in Aerospace and on the Board of Advisors of the Thomas Jefferson Public Policy Program, The College of William and Mary. She is a visiting professor in the Department of Economics at Johns Hopkins University. Her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in economics are from Johns Hopkins University and her undergraduate degree in economics is from The College of William and Mary.
