Purposes of the American Climate Alliance (ACA)

As a result of its workshop “Anthropogenic Climate Destabilization: A Worst-case Scenario,” Foundation For the Future plans (as a first step) to play a critical role in coordinating the establishment and development of the American Climate Alliance (ACA). The purpose of ACA is to bring together American climate-action organizations to act as a group to ensure American leadership in solving the climate crisis that humanity is facing. While there are hundreds of such organizations and there is already an attempt to bring some of them together, their disparate activities can become much more effective and powerful if they all band together in a national alliance. The American Climate Alliance will become a forceful voice representing the constituencies of all of the groups concerned with the impact of global climate change on humanity.

Foundation For the Future will manage the $2 million of initial funding already committed to establish and develop the American Climate Alliance and coordinate its early activities. The early focus of the Alliance will be to develop and implement an Action Plan that will lead to the creation of a fully funded NASA-like government agency to provide American leadership in solving the problems associated with global climate change. Just as America led the world in developing the technology required to land humans on the Moon, we, as a nation, have the ability to lead the world in developing the technologies required to mitigate the impact of climate change.

The proposed name of the agency is the National Climate Administration (NCA). Its main purpose will be to manage a research and technology development and demonstration program that will lead to the mitigation of climate impact on civilization within a reasonable time period. The agency will establish a ten-year program of climate change mitigation similar to the NASA Apollo Program that took Americans to the Moon.

Objectives of the American Climate Alliance

• To establish an alliance of American organizations concerned with the global impact of climate change.

• To lobby Congress to create and pass legislation that will result in the establishment of a National Climate Administration (NCA), whose purpose is to develop comprehensive strategies and technology programs to resolve the major problems associated with global climate change.

• To ensure US government funding for the creation and operation of a government agency, the National Climate Administration (NCA).

Methods to Develop the American Climate Alliance

Foundation For the Future will spearhead the creation of the American Climate Alliance by establishing ACA Organizing and Planning Committees to further the development of the organization. The Organizing Committee was established in September, 2008 and includes senior officials of the Foundation For the Future, experts in climate change and global warming, and scholars concerned with the future of humanity. The Planning Committee, which will be formed during the early part of 2009, will be composed of prominent climate scientists and the heads or senior representatives from American organizations, institutions, corporations, and government departments concerned with the impact of global climate change.

• The American Climate Alliance has already established an ACA Organizing Committee, is in the process of establishing an ACA Planning Committee, an ACA Executive Committee, and an ACA organizational structure.

• The ACA will develop Action Plans to achieve its goals. It will host a series of meetings with the heads or senior representatives of its constituent organizations to determine strategies, responsibilities, schedules, will implement the Action Plans and will assign responsibilities for each constituent organization.

• The ACA will implement and manage its Action Plans to establish the National Climate Administration (NCA).
